How To Turn On An Android Phone With A Broken Power Button

The power button is a super important part of any phone. Your Android uses the power button to turn the phone on and to turn it off. A broken power button complicates things. Fortunately, you don’t need to buy a new phone just because your power button is broken; you can turn your Android off and on without a power button using a variety of workarounds.

This article teaches you how to turn on and off your Android phone if the power button has stopped working. We’ve structured this article in a very specific order—pick what you need to do (turn on your phone, turn off your phone, or restart your phone)—then work your way through the guide starting at the top, and you’ll have your phone on (or off) in just a few minutes!

How to Turn On Android Phone Without Power Button

If your phone is off, how do you turn it on without the power button? It’s tricky, but not impossible. Here are your options:

Plug it In to Avoid the Power Button

Simple: just plug your Android phone into the wall or your computer. This won’t work on all phones, but if it does, your Android will turn on automatically without you needing to press any buttons.

Remove the Battery

If your phone has a removable battery, another trick to start your phone if the power button doesn’t work is to remove the battery and then plug your phone in (with the battery detached). Then, when your phone starts up, reattach the battery.

Schedule it to Power On

Just like the above method, this technique for turning on Android without a power button isn’t supported on every device (e.g., Google Pixel phones don’t have this). However, if your phone can do this, it’s one of the best ways to turn the phone on with a broken power button because it’s completely automated. The only downside is that it runs on a schedule, so you can’t decide on a whim to turn your phone off/on. Plus, it won’t work if your phone is currently off!

Here’s how to set it up:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Utilities.
  3. Choose Scheduled power on/off.
  4. Switch the toggle on next to Power on.
  5. Tap Set time for power on.
  6. Pick the time you want your phone to automatically turn on.

Samsung devices also support this scheduled restart option. It’s called Restart on schedule, and it’s accessible through Settings > Device care.

Use a Small Object

If your phone doesn’t turn on with the power button because its casing fell off, then the button probably still works. Instead of using your finger, which might be difficult, press a small object into the area where the button was located. We recommend using a toothpick, but anything that can fit in the slot will work.

How to Turn Off Phone Without Power Button

Following are the best ways to shut your Android phone off if the power button doesn’t work:

Press the On-Screen Power Button

Turning your phone off if the power button doesn’t work is actually relatively easy. That’s because there’s a “soft” power button built into your phone. Here’s how to use it:

  1. Swipe down from the top of the screen.
  2. When the toggles show up at the top, swipe down once more to see the full Quick Settings menu.
  3. Tap the power icon at the bottom.
  4. Tap Power off.

Use Apps to Replace the Power Button

Believe it or not, you can install a “power button app” to simulate the real power button. Just as you’d expect, the app lets you turn off your phone from the screen instead of with the physical button. And you don’t need to root your Android for it to work.

A few apps we recommend for this are Shutdown (no root) and Power Menu. You can see that the Shutdown app for Android mimics the built-in power menu, so it’s very intuitive to use.

Take Out the Battery

Unless your phone is plugged in, it needs a battery to work. Some Androids have a compartment that lets you remove the battery. Open that up and take out the battery to fully power off your phone. This process doesn’t require a power button at all.

Schedule it to Power Off

The directions above for scheduling your phone to turn on also lets you power off your phone without the power button. Just choose the Power off toggle instead, and then set a schedule for that.

How to Restart Phone Without Power Button

Most of the methods already discussed on this page can be used to restart the phone with a broken power button. For example, you can pull the battery, use an app, or trigger a reboot with the soft power button in the Quick Settings menu. Here are a few other options:

Use your Assistant to Reboot

Bixby is the virtual assistant installed on Samsung phones. Say something like Bixby, restart my phone. That’s it; no power button necessary!

Auto-Restart on Failure

Some Samsung phones support Auto Restart, but it only triggers when performance issues are detected. Here’s how to turn that on:

  1. Open Settings and tap Device care.
  2. Choose Auto restart.
  3. Tap the Restart when needed toggle.

Use a Fastboot Command From a Computer

This method is a bit involved, but it’s a surefire way to reboot your phone without the power button. You’ll need your computer to complete these steps:

  1. Download ADB and fastboot to your computer.
  2. Plug your phone into your computer.
  3. Turn on USB debugging on your phone.
  4. Open Command Prompt on your PC and change the working directory to the platform tools folder (it’s a folder within the fastboot download).
  5. Type the following: fastboot reboot.
  6. Your Android will immediately restart.

After the flash have the battery ready to slide up to the power connector, once of any type of logo appears slide the battery up connecting the battery to the phone. Phone will start. If the phone flashes twice it may not work. Start the process over. (generally only good for phones 9 and down.)

  93. if you have a moto g6, DO NOT try this!!! it will just give you a screen of options like reboot, factory reset, etc. and to select an option you have to use the power button, so this method is useless

  172. I have an Alcatel A3 Marshmallow, it is turned off and the power button does’t work. I pressed the two volume buttons then I connected it to my computer via an USB cable. The “Fast boot” or something similar to it came up (I do not know what’s that page) – (It says “Android Recovery……… Press the volume key to select, press the power key to confirm”). The page is showing the selection of 7 languages and I can’t select any of them using the power button which is not working, nor turn off the phone. The battery of the phone is part of it, it is not releasable. Help me please….

    • okay great advice all the way up to the part where no one and i mean no one tells you how to select the option start or any options after using the volume key to get to the recovery screen. if the power button is not working you can not select the option of start. neither does any other button do anything what do i do moto edge thanks in advance

    • Hold down the volume down button. Without releasing the button, connect your phone to your PC. You will enter download mode. Cancel whatever operation you see on your screen and the phone should boot up.
