Free Version Of Archos Video Player For Android Released To Play Store

Sporting a visually-attractive UI loaded with a plethora of video playing and streaming capabilities, Archos Video Player for Android was released in the Play Store back in December as a $4.99 app (currently priced at $5.21). If the app’s relatively hefty price tag kept you from giving it a try, here’s some great news for you: the company has just launched an ad-supported free version of Archos Video Player that grants you access to all the features offered in the paid equivalent. Besides being a quality video player, the app impresses with its option to automatically fetch movie & TV show information from the internet for your local and network media files, complete with relevant posters and backdrops. In addition, it boasts several other nifty features including universal media file format support, folder & library-based content browsing, built-in subtitle downloader, SMB & UPnP support, complete tablet-optimization, on-the-fly video content bookmarking, info-rich hierarchical view of TV shows, automatic video playback resuming, and lots more.

The app’s home screen makes navigating to your local and network video content a breeze, and also shows you a preview of your last played video at the bottom. It is from here that you can browse your local video library for your favorite TV shows, movies and recently played media, or avail the app’s UPnP and SMB features to stream content from your network devices.

While browsing your video library, you can switch between list and poster views. Once on the information screen of a particular file, you can sift through all the media details displayed atop the automatically-fetched backdrop. Archos Player retrieves this information from sources like IMDB and TheMovieDB. It also lets you fetch subtitles from various online sources, and provides you with the option to import subtitle files from your device’s SD card as well.

Apart from selecting a backdrop for your videos, you can choose a different poster/thumbnail for each file as desired. Needless to say, the app remembers the last played position and bookmark status of each file that you’ve played at least once, and lets you jump straight to the required spot from the library or file info screen.

Unlike MX Player and the likes, Archos Video Player does not support gesture-based playback control. However, while playing videos, it offers all the necessary controls such as the seekbar, video scaling toggle, file info window, subtitle selection dropdown, screen rotation lock, brightness level adjuster, on-screen notification toggle, play mode selection option (single file, folder or repeated playback) and of course, the video bookmarking toggle.
