7 Ways to Use ChatGPT to Prep for a Job Interview

ChatGPT helping preparing for job interview

So you’ve used our 5 Tips to Write the Best Resume Using ChatGPT article and landed a job interview. Congratulations! You passed the first test, and now it’s on to the hard part: impressing your employer and demonstrating that you’re everything your resume promised you would be. The key to nailing a job interview is all in the preparation. You should have an idea of what they will ask you, how you will respond and have a list of questions to ask them.

Ok, take a deep breath. You’re not on your own. We can use our good friend ChatGPT for help on how to prepare for your job interview.

1. Find What They’re Looking For

First, ask ChatGPT what companies typically look for when interviewing for your role. Fill in the blanks with your job title and industry. For the sake of this article, we used copywriter as the job title and tech as the industry.

As you can see, you’ll need to demonstrate these eight skills in your interview. In this setting, it’s important to show, not just tell. For example, it’s one thing to say in your resume or cover letter that you have technical expertise and are up-to-date on industry knowledge, but actually talking shop in your interview will really take you to the next level.

2. Find the Top Three Skills

Let’s get specific. It’s important to have a general idea of what employers in your industry are looking for, but it’s even more crucial to know what your particular hiring manager will be looking for.

To do this, copy the description for the job you’re applying for into ChatGPT. For consistency’s sake, we’ll use the same description as in the ‘5 Tips to Write the Best Resume Using ChatGPT’ article, which is as follows:

Day-to-day responsibilities include:

Generate strong concepts and champion ideas with enthusiasm.

Apply your love of words and exceptional language skills to create compelling copy for integrated campaign work.

Present concepts and rationale to key clients.

Work closely with other members of the creative team, strategists, account group and everyone else involved in creating great work.

What You Bring to the Table:

4+ years experience in an agency environment

Experience with big, national or global brands

360 campaign experience with a strong digital lens

Strong strategic and conceptual thinking – as demonstrated by your portfolio

Natural ability to present ideas in an inspiring and persuasive manner to both internal and external stakeholders

Exceptional people skills

Up to date on the latest social trends and marketing technology.”

Then ask ChatGPT to highlight the three most important skills in this job description:

Again, you’ll need to show, not just tell, the employer that you possess these skills. In this case, make sure you’re ready to answer some strategic planning questions, communicate clearly and don’t use ‘um’ and ‘like’ every second word.

3. Find The Most Common Questions

Anticipating what you might be asked makes it much easier to prepare. It will also make you less nervous and less likely to break up your answers with filler words like ‘um’ and ‘like.’

Ask ChatGPT the ten most common questions companies ask when interviewing candidates for a(n) [job title] role.

You can also get more specific and ask ChatGPT for technical interview questions and behavioural interview questions. Technical questions test your hard skills and knowledge of technical concepts. You’ll potentially be required to demonstrate your expertise through problem-solving exercises. Behavioural questions test your soft skills. You might be asked about past experiences with collaboration and conflict resolution or how you would handle certain hypothetical situations.

Now that you’ve got the questions, you can start preparing your answers.

4. Find The Answers

When reading all those questions, your palms might get sweaty, but don’t worry! ChatGPT to the rescue! You can use our dear AI friend to help you come up with personalized answers to all thirty of these sample questions. You only need to copy and paste your resume and ask ChatGPT to draft responses.

5. Find Better Answers

As you can see, the answer ChatGPT gave didn’t even fit into the screenshot, so let’s ask it to condense it so the interviewers don’t fall asleep while you’re going on and on about your experience. Also, it’s very formal, so we’ll ask it to use more common words. You don’t want to sound like a robot.

You can also ask it to:

  • Use more compelling language
  • Include specific metrics and outcomes
  • Tailor the answer to the job description

Keep going until you’re happy with the response, then try your best to remember the answer without memorizing it word for word. Remember, you’re not an actor reading off a script at an audition.

6. Find Questions for Them

Never go to a job interview empty-handed. That is, always have your own list of questions prepared to ask your potential future employer.

Job interviews are like dates. Imagine you went on a date where you asked the other person a million questions about themselves, and they didn’t ask a single one about you. You’d probably never want to see them again, right? Well, it’s the same principle with job interviews.

To find the best questions to ask your interviewer, ask ChatGPT to give you a list of ten questions you could ask an interviewer for a [job title] role at a(n) [industry] company.

Now you can memorize these questions but don’t list them off until the end when your interviewer asks you if you have any questions for them.

7. Find Ways To Give Thanks

Now that you know what skills to emphasize, how to respond to questions and what to ask your employer, you should feel much more confident about your upcoming interview. But the hiring process doesn’t end when the interview does. You should ALWAYS send a thank you note, and, you guessed it, you can use ChatGPT to help craft the perfect note.

You can tweak it by asking ChatGPT to make it longer, shorter, more personalized (add in a detail you talked about in the interview), more formal etc. A good thank you note can be like the cherry on top of a job interview, so send it within 24 hours of meeting your employer, and you’ll likely increase your chances of getting the position.

If there is anything else that you’re nervous about with your upcoming interview, ask ChatGPT for help. You can ask it how to act, what to wear, and even do a mock interview. However, one thing we recommend doing the old-fashioned way is to research the company you’re interviewing for. Do an in-depth scan of their website and social media pages to gain insight into your potential future employer’s values and culture. You should also look into who the competitors are and think about what you can do to help the company you’re interviewing for achieve its goals. With this and all seven tips in mind, you’ll be more than prepared to kill it at your job interview! Good luck!
