How to open Task Manager on Windows 11

Task Manager on Windows 11

If you’ve explored Windows 11 yourself, one of the first thing you learn is the taskbar context menu is now gone. You can right-click the taskbar and access taskbar settings which will open the Settings app. All other options, including the option to open the Task Manager are gone.

If you’re wondering how you can open Task Manager on Windows 11, we have a list of methods that still work.

1. Run box

The run box is the easiest way to open many stock Windows 10 apps and tools. You can use it to open Task Manager.

  1. Tap the Win+R keyboard shortcut to open the run box.
  2. In the run box, enter taskmgr.exe and tap the Enter key.

2. WinX menu

If you have trouble remembering what to enter in the run box to open Task Manager, you can use the WinX menu.

  1. Right-click the Start button on the taskbar.
  2. From the context menu, select Task Manager.

3. Windows Search

You can use Windows Search to find and open the Task Manager.

  1. Tap Win+S to open Windows Search.
  2. Enter Task Manager and select the matching result.

4. File Explorer

File Explorer can be used to open Windows stock apps and tools. Much like the run box, you can use it to open Task Manager.

  1. Open File Explorer.
  2. In the location bar, enter taskmgr.exe and tap the Enter key.
  3. Task Manager will open.

5. Command Prompt & PowerShell

You can use both Command Prompt and PowerShell to open Task Manager. The process is the same. Pick the command line tool that you like.

  1. Open Command Prompt or PowerShell with admin rights.
  2. Enter this: taskmgr.exe and tap Enter.
  3. Task Manager will open.

6. Ctrl+Alt+Delete

The Ctrl+Alt+Delete keyboard shortcut still works on Windows 11 and it is highly unlikely to be retired.

  1. Tap the Ctrl+Alt+Delete keyboard shortcut.
  2. From the menu, select Task Manager.

Conclusion

There are lots of different ways to open Task Manager and some are easier to use than others. The only method that is as easy to use as the context menu method that worked on Windows 10 is the WinX menu method. Windows 11 is still in early beta which means it could look and behave very differently compared to what we’re seeing know. It’s possible the context menu, or an alternative to it is added later on. Regardless, these methods should still work.
