How To Root Your Android Phone Or Tablet

Android is based on Linux and comes locked with only standard user access given to its user. Root access – also known as Superuser access – is the access level on Linux-based devices that lets their users perform administrative tasks including writing to the system partition, installing Linux binaries and scripts at the core level, modifying protected system files and changing their permissions, and using several apps that require such privileges that aren’t possible without root access. We have been covering rooting procedures for several Android devices in the past and in this post, we aim to bring them all together. In the beginning, you might see just a few devices listed here but over time, we will be updating this guide with rooting procedures for all the devices we have already covered as well as those we will be covering in the future.

The procedure for rooting an Android phone or tablet varies from device to device, based on its version of Android as well as any manufacturer or carrier-specific restrictions placed in its firmware. Fortunately, we have already covered several universal rooting methods that should work on many Android phones and tablets. In addition, we have also written about specific rooting procedures for almost all popular Android phones and tablets, as well as for some relatively less popular ones.

So, all you have to do is try out the universal methods, and if they don’t work for your device, use the specific procedure for it from the list below. We shall be adding more devices here as they get released and their rooting methods become available.

Disclaimer: Rooting your device will void its warranty. In addition, performing the rooting procedure incorrectly may have unexpected consequences. Please follow this guide at your own risk. AddictiveTips will not be liable if your device gets damaged or bricked during the process.

Universal Rooting Methods

If one of these methods works for your device, you don’t need to go through any dedicated procedure. Just confirm that the method you are using supports your device, before trying it out. The methods listed first are for the latest versions of Android, but often support many earlier versions as well, so trying them first should do it for most users.

  14. Hi!

Mine is a Gionee Gpad_G2 with JB 4.1.2 (Kernel version – 3.4.5). I’m unable to read Malayalam (regional) font on my phone!!! However, this works perfectly well on several other Gionee models, though!

Upon googling, I came across a post saying that I’d need to root my phone and then I’d be able to read Malayalam font on it. I tried doing so using Mobogenie and then it said that my phone was successfully rooted. But still, I’m unable to read this font. I’m a non-techie person and I’m stuck with this process. I don’t understand where and how am I going wrong here!!!

Last day, I came across this post and wanted to check my chance here. It’d be of great help if someone here could explain me the detailed procedure by which I can solve this issue?

    Thanks

  105. Wow. Thank you for sharing the knowledge after going through all the learning process yourselves. This is a great example of what communities in the real world should be like. It all starts somwhere, right? 😉

reminds me of wikipedia: “Imagine a world in which every single human being can freely share in the sum of all knowledge. That’s our commitment.”

  115. Greetings:

I’m a complte newbie as it pertains to Android. I got a Viewsonic ViewPad 10 – the one with dual boot Android and Windows 7. It’s a cool device but my issue is that it’s running Android 1.6. I found what I think is a ROM for it on code.google.com, but I am SO nervous about actually doing the root! And isnt the ROM for upgrading the OS – not rooting? If someone could post rooting procedures for the Viewsonic Viewpad 10 I would be most grateful! Thanks!

  120. Can you please provide information for :
    Model No. Micromax Andro A60
    Firmware Version : 2.1-update1
    Baseband & Build Version : A60_I-TSACD044
    Kernel Version : 2.6.29-perf
    Kernel@Micromax
    Thanx

    • uni android root works fine for A60 …wifi tether for root also works with some tweaking settings…glk.

  121. Do the universal methods support rooting Micromax A60 (which actually is rebranded ZTE penguin)?

Or will the ZTE Racer way work?

A60 comes with the stock 2.1 (update1 or whatever it means).

I want it to enable wireless tethering.

    • I am not sure whether the universal method supports it or not but I wouldn’t recommend trying a method that is specific to one device, with another one.
I’ll just try finding a dedicated method for the ZTE Penguin and feature it here when (if) I find one.

    • The procedure for rooting an Android phone or tablet varies from device to device, based on its version of Android as well as any manufacturer or carrier-specific restrictions placed in its firmware. Fortunately, we have already covered several universal rooting methods that should work on many Android phones and tablets. In addition, we have also written about specific rooting procedures for almost all popular Android phones and tablets, as well as for some relatively less popular ones.

    • Could you upload a guide to rooting the new Live with Walkman? 🙁 can’t seem to get it done through any of these methods.. 🙁

    • By the way, have you checked out any of the universal methods to see if they support it? Might be worth a try.

    • any of this work on a alcatel 2.1 android phone this got about 5 apps that i cant kill that are not android !!!!!
