How To Root The Samsung Galaxy Gio S5660

Samsung-Galaxy-Gio-rootThe Samsung Galaxy Gio may not be the most powerful or feature rich Android device on the market, but offering Android 2.2 Froyo, a 16m color screen and a 3.2 MP auto-focus camera at under $160 is more then a bargain. Intended as a budget device, the Gio has found itself in the hands of quite a few eager Android users. If you thought the phone felt bland, you can unleash its full potential now that root access has been achieved. Read on for more on how to root the Gio.

The rooting procedure is one of the most convenient and easiest we have come across for Android devices. It involves flashing a zip file via recovery, that is it! If you’re wondering why or if you should root your Gio, see our guide on  top 10 reasons to root your Android device.

So let’s get your Samsung Gio rooted!

Disclaimer: Please follow this guide at your own risk. AddictiveTips will not be liable if your device gets damaged or bricked during the process.

Requirements:

  • (https://addictivetips.com/app/uploads/2011/06/Update.zip) Download Update.zip

Instructions:

  1. To begin, download the update.zip file from the link above and copy it to the root of your SD card.
  2. Power the phone off.
  3. Boot into recovery mode by holding the middle button and pressing the power button.
  4. Once in recovery mode, select update from sdcard and choose the update.zip that you copied to your SD card.
  5. Let the file flash and once done, reboot your phone.

Voila! All done, your Samsung Gio is now rooted.

  4. How do I select the option to update from the SDcard? i can’t scroll through the options to select it.

  5. Sounds really sweet. I’m curious though, will the update.zip involve anything else but adding admini rights to my current Android installation? I’m running Gingerbread2.3.4 with Swedish SWYPE support, and it would be sad if this procedure somehow messed up (for example) my Swedish input keyboard, or anything similar. One has heard so many stories! ;> Cheers!

  11. This update.zip works fine as described, but don’t also press the *louder* button on the left side (the third one) to enter recovery mode unless you enter RAM DUMP mode instead. If this happens to you, remove the battery and then try boot into recovery mode again !

  12. I already try with Z4 root (1.1,1.2 and 1.3).It is fail and not yet root. Can I try with this one.

  17. Did not worked on Bell’s Gio GT-5660. The bottom of update screen: E:Error in /tmp/sideload/package.zip (Status 7) Installation aborted.
Above on the screen also shows e.g. GT-5570, GT-B7510. Looks to me it maybe not working on Gio (GT-5660) ?
I first used original SD card and just loaded unmodified downloaded file. I tried to loaded on Sd card unzipped folder. I tried just blank SD card with unmodified .zip file.
    Any idea ? Thanks

    • I think you should read “How To Root The Samsung Galaxy Ace On Froyo And Gingerbread” as the Bell Gio GT-5660 has Android 2.3.4(Gingerbread) and not Android 2.2(Froyo), for which this post is. Hope this helps

    • didn’t work for me also with bell phone.
      BUT this one worked
      Universal_GB_ROOT.zip

  18. Guys,

I installed the update.zip , but when I reboot the phone I get in a menu where it’s listed. I just can’t press the damn thing: my whole touchscree is disabled, and the only thing that I can do is press the middle button so it restarts.

At the same time I got the tip to look for apps like ‘click lag fix (olcf) or SuperOneClick v1.9.1

these don’t show up in the market though. I live in the Netherlands, so anyone that can help me out?
